The Bays welcomes both private health-insured and self-funded patients.

Private health-insured patients

We recommend that you consult with your health fund about your health insurance policy and exactly what it covers for pregnancy and childbirth. Ask about potential gap and excess payments, or waiting periods.

Admissions to the special care nursery and services provided by anaesthetists, paediatricians and other specialists will incur charges that may not be fully covered by Medicare or your health fund. In this case gap payments may be required. Your doctor or health fund can give you more information.

Be aware that you may incur additional costs during your stay with us such as phone calls, partner meals or take-home medication from the pharmacy.

Ambulance cover

Ambulance cover is an aspect of private health cover that may vary from fund to fund. Some funds restrict their ambulance cover if you need to be transferred elsewhere from The Bays Hospital.

We recommend you join Ambulance Victoria prior to your hospital admission and ensure you have complete ambulance cover.

Self-funded maternity patients

You can still have your baby at The Bays even if you don’t have private health insurance with pregnancy cover.

We offer self-funded maternity packages for patients without private health insurance from $4,961* for a 2-night stay.

Your experience includes:

  • All care provided by our award winning maternity team
  • Accommodation in a private room
  • State of the art delivery suites with private deep baths
  • A la carte restaurant quality meals made fresh to order and delivered at your preferred time

*Price excludes special care nursery admission, additional operating theatre/caesarean-related fees, obstetrician fees, paediatrician fees, anaesthetist fees, diagnostic charges and other hospital related expenses. Duration of stay commences from time of arrival and is 48 hours from arrival to the hospital. Prices are current from 1 July 2023.
